THE ROAD TAX IN BELGIUM
The Belgian Road tax is based on a smart kilometric detection system. It involves Belgian and foreign HGVs weighing more than 3.5 tonnes (maximum authorised weight > 3.5 tonnes) which travel on highways and some regional or local roads in the three regions of Belgium.
Since April 1, 2016, a new toll system has been introduced in Belgium. Every truck over 3.5 tons must be equipped with a satellite box called OBU (On Board Unit). It replaces the Eurovignette in Belgium for trucks over 12 tons.
The OBU counts the kilometres travelled and records the routes your trucks take.
This new system applies on the Belgian highways and some of the country’s major roads, covering a total of more than 6,800 km.
